We asked Raymi Phénix to give us his opinion as a professional mentalist on the medium Bruno Charvet. It is obvious that we will come back in a future article to give you our own opinion.
“…Before I give you my opinion, know that a young mental magician calling himself a mentalist made a video, pointing the finger at Mr. Charvet, publicly revealing various “cold reading” techniques (psychological techniques, studied among others by mentalists, used by many false clairvoyants and mediums in order to make people believe in certain faculties), putting forward the idea that Mr. Charvet could use these techniques. Mr. Charvet’s production asked the young man to unpublish his video, a YouTuber from the “skeptics” community came to the defense of the young mental magician and challenges Mr. Charvet, which brings publicity to both the mental magician and the skeptic as well as to Mr. Charvet: “It doesn’t matter whether we talk about you good or bad, the important thing is that we talk about you!” Skeptics certainly think they are doing the right thing by denouncing various subjects. However, you should know that if someone wants to believe in something, logic will not be able to reason with them because emotion will always take over! So, trying to demonstrate that Mr. Charvet uses “cold reading” techniques and perhaps making him appear to be a charlatan will in no way change the conviction of people who believe in his abilities… Quite the contrary! Is a priest who gives a blessing for the healing of a sick person a charlatan? It will depend on the angle of view and the beliefs of the person who “judges”. Would denouncing religious practices cause all churches or temples to be closed under the pretext that science has not yet proven the existence of a god? Of course not, there is nothing logical about faith! I know people who, failing to consult a psychiatrist, following certain traumas, went to see mediums, clairvoyants, priests… some of whom simply listened and gave good advice, which allowed these people to move forward in their lives according to their convictions.
Let us now return to what interests Mr. Sissaoui, namely what I think of Mr. Bruno Charvet. My answer will be short and I think what will happen after this one will be much more interesting..! To begin with, I do not know Mr. Charvet personally and I have only seen him work through a few videos quickly viewed on YouTube. Often, a video is just a summary of the best moments and you need to know the real filming conditions: what happened before, what the team’s tasks are, what information the “medium” has, etc. Yes, it is possible to reproduce this with “cold reading” techniques but I have learned, through my job as a mentalist, to keep in mind that a phenomenon can be explained in different ways, what we will call the “field of possibilities”. Even if everything tends to demonstrate that this is perhaps one of these possibilities, that does not mean that there are not others that we cannot perceive! So until I have met Mr. Charvet and studied the situation closely, I will not be able topronounce on his said abilities. This is good because he says in a video that he would like to talk with a mentalist… Apparently, like many people, he associates mentalists with mental magicians who have appropriated our name for years. Yet another debate…!
This, in my eyes, is the most important paragraph of this article. My goal is not to determine who is right or who is wrong, or even to make you adhere to my beliefs, but to give you various elements for reflection which may be interesting so that you can maintain a critical mind, realize that there are several ways of seeing things and above all keep in mind that there is a range of possibilities. On December 15, 2014, Mr. François Lallier submitted a doctoral thesis to the Faculty of Medicine of Reims, which received honors by shaking up current concepts, putting forward the hypothesis that a second consciousness, totally independent of matter, existed, based on various research carried out in this field. Some work by quantum researchers reaches the same conclusion and explains that in a quantum field, a digital signature would define us and would interact with other signatures and especially with our brain. This field would be a reservoir of information that we could access depending on our state of consciousness. This is also how they explain that two inventors can have, without even knowing each other, because they are each on a different continent, the same idea down to the last detail. This may make you think of what the ancients called the Akashic Records (esoteric concept, cosmic memory, of an etheric nature, which, like a sensitive film, would record the events of the world). Some neuroscientists also explore the possibility of an external consciousness, like Ms. Corine Sombrun who, following a self-imposed shamanic trance, continues her research on the subject. Conferences tell his story as well as the film “A Bigger World”. You would have to write an article of several pages to explain everything to you! Even if research is underway on the subject, keep in mind that nothing is really validated and proven! Science is constantly questioning itself and continues to evolve. What is true today may turn out to be false tomorrow, as with the “right brain and left brain theory” which is today considered a totally obsolete myth but which is still present in certain tests published in the press, in training courses, etc. One day, the magazine “The World of the Unknown” asked me to do an investigation concerning a Thai nun who floats on the surface of the water in the lotus position. They wanted to know if it was true or if it was a hoax. For me, the question was more “what does it bring to the people who come to see it?” What is his intention? Sacred cheating (cheating which makes it possible to improve the well-being of the person consulting) has always existed and amplifies the work of the consultant, through a very powerful placebo effect. People like the surgeon Thierry Janssen or Alejandro Jodorowsky talk in their books about these famous cheats and their therapeutic benefits! From a certain point of view, this can be compared to charlatanism, fraud. I understand it… But on a more psychological side, the beneficial result is very present! Everything will depend on the intention of the person using thecheating. Does he want the good of his client or does he want his own good?! Speaking of cheating, this makes me think of certain psychics who used techniques to retrieve, before or at the start of a session, information without the client’s knowledge in order to begin their reading with a feeling of security in order to be able to gradually “slide” into a totally intuitive perception. Moreover, all the greatest “cold readers” will say that to become a good “cold reader”, you must know how to correctly apply the techniques and above all know how to listen to your intuition! This is why we find, in closed circles of mentalists, booklets dealing with “intuitive cold reading” because intuition is also worked on in this art. For years, in the USA, there have been television programs where mediums deliver messages. We see people bursting into tears… Often tears of liberation! Is it cold reading, mediumship or even something else? In my eyes, it doesn’t matter as long as the intention is good and good is done to others… It is of course reprehensible if the said medium does things with a personal goal of negative manipulation and even more so if he puts the person in danger, whether physically or financially.
To finish on this subject, Mr. Charvet gives his public demonstrations and people come to see him out of curiosity or to get a message. The “skeptics” will say that he is one of the many charlatans who lives off the misfortune of others. But based on this idea, a doctor, an undertaker and many other professions also make a living from people’s misfortune… And yet they are considered as companions, they support the suffering. We must take into account that the people who are going to consult really feel the need… The most important thing is to carefully choose caring, attentive and competent help, while maintaining a critical mind in order to explore the field of possibilities.”
