Mental manipulation
…. In August 2012, my husband went to Parakou (Republic of Benin) to see marabouts to, according to him, unlock his destiny and protect himself. He returned 15 days later with two buckets of soap preparation for his washing, blessed water to drink and flour to eat. The children and I were not to touch it so as not to lose its power. I pointed out to him that it takes years of showers before you can be happy given the quantity of soaps.
He is often given foul-smelling potions with which he must perfume himself. We are subject to several prohibitions prescribed by these marabouts so as not to attract misfortune…
In December 2013, I left home with our three children to settle in the provinces (we lived in Paris), life together became too unbearable for the children and me. I told him that he needed to give himself time to think. He has been doing very badly since this separation. He lost 15 kg, was hospitalized several times and has been on sick leave ever since. He thinks he will find the solution with his marabouts. They kept deceiving him, making him believe that they had the power to bring us back. They managed to make him believe that I had committed adultery and that my lover had cast a spell on him and that it was for this reason that he was sick and wasting away and many other nonsense.
I tell him it’s all false but he firmly believes it. He tells those around him that he has no proof of my adultery but that ‘‘his marabouts’’ were very strong and trustworthy. He says incoherent things that the marabouts would have told him to the point that my 10-year-old daughter said to me: “Mom, I think the marabouts removed dad’s brain.”
All the slander from these marabouts makes him suffer, eats away at him, but he finds that it is me who is a liar and that he no longer trusts me. He calls them all the time to get information about me. He told me that he had received medicine from ‘‘his marabouts’’ and that he felt better. His head is very bad. He is completely bewitched and cannot do anything or decide anything without the advice of these marabouts.
He returned to work part-time last week. All services and consultations of these marabouts are chargeable. I always tell him that he will lose himself if he continues with them but he thinks that I am the one who is crazy.
He would like the children and me to return to our home in Paris but I let him know that this was not possible as long as he teamed up with these marabouts…
